OVERVIEW OF 6TH GRADE SCIENCE Life Science is the primary focus of 6th grade Science class. This course is often based on lab work, projects, and teacher generated materials. It is very important for my students to have a 3 ring binder with a section or folder devoted to science. Every paper that is handed out in class, any work produced by my students, and any ongoing projects should be kept in the science folder unless otherwise directed. Tests and quizzes in 6/1 science are open notebook,. At the end of each unit a table of contents is handed out and students are given time to organize their notebooks before I check my students' notebooks. The notebook check results in a grade as important as a quiz, so good organization is rewarded. The units of study in 6th grade science are; Getting Started, Water, What is Life?, Microbiology, The Animal Kingdom, and The Plant Kingdom. There is a textbook that is sometimes used for 6th grade science but much of the work we will be doing is based on teacher generated materials, lab projects, and student projects.and so the text, Prentice Hall Life Science, is used as a resource and kept in the classroom unless a student would like to check out a copy to take home to catch up on some missed work or do some research for a project. At the beginning of the school year each student will bring home a copy of a letter to parents covering this material to be signed and returned to the student 's science notebook so that parents and students have a clear idea of the 6th grade science courseorganization and expectations.
