The Tilton-Northfield School District was formed by an act of the General
Court in 1927, making it the first cooperative school district in the
state of New Hampshire. The school, at that time, accommodated only those
children in grades 1-8. Students in grades 9-12 went to the Tilton School,
a private school in town. In 1939, a Junior-Senior High School for the
Tilton and Northfield Union School District was built.
The school's original construction was done by the Public Works Administration
(PWA). The PWA was a government agency created in 1933 as a part of President
Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal, and was involved in the construction
of many public works projects, including schools, bridges, dams, and housing
developments. In 1939 the PWA became a division of the Federal Works Agency.
