Research Guide – Middle School

  1. Gather your materials:
    index cards of various colors with elastics
    favorite writing tools
    index cards
    highlighters
  2. Choose a topic and have it approved by your teacher.
  3. Brainstorm questions and write each question on a separate card, all one color.
  4. Collect information from:
    books (photocopy pages you want to read)
    the Internet
    magazines
    people
  5. List the citation information for each source on cards of a second color or on the citation worksheet.
  6. Take a break because you have been working hard.
  7. Settle into a spot where there will be no interruptions and begin to read the information and highlight answers to your questions.
  8. Write notes on the back of each question card, as you find your answers.
  9. Include additional information that you come across on new note cards.
  10. Arrange your cards in an order that make sense to you.
  11. Type your notes into complete sentences.
  12. Type your citations page from cards or worksheet.
  13. Edit your draft.
